Freshly Squeezed OpEd: Apple's Phablet Is Already Here

Jan 16, 2014 | Uncategorized | 1 comment

Call me crazy all that you want to (okay, okay, that’s enough already) but I believe that Apple has all the pieces necessary for the ultimate phablet.

The main component you may already know. The iPad Mini with retina display. It already has the main thing that everyone has been clamoring for – screen real estate. 7.9 inches of it to be exact.

The only thing it requires is the phone component. Now, I’m not an engineer, but I do know that Apple has never ever let engineering become an obstacle. What they would have to do is add the phone component to the existing rMM (relatively minimal retooling, I should think, resulting in a huge chunk of savings). Then Bluetooth it to an earpiece, and – BOOM! – there’s your Apple phablet.
The rMM resides in your pocket, messenger bag or purse. Answer all of your phone calls as you would with your Bluetooth-enabled iPhone. You’ve seen how unwieldy phablets are to hold up to your ear, right? Since we already have Bluetooth enabled in our mobile devices, why not just marry two of the already existing devices to create a new one?
Now you can answer your calls, check your email, take/show photographs and video, surf or (pardon the expression!) do some work, you’re ready to go.
And it isn’t as Apple hasn’t already set precedent for this kind of idea. Look at what happened to the iPod touch. It’s pretty much dead in the water. Why?  Because your iPhone allows you to accomplish of all of your daily tasks, plus receive your calls! So basically, it’s déjà vu.
And as I said earlier in the article, all of these components are already manufactured. so there’s minimal retooling involved.
For those of you who still hold to the “Jobs is God” axiom, this fits in nicely with his minimalist practices.
Now, add wearable technology, such as an iWatch to the equation and you have an extremely powerful, yet relatively small ecosystem.
That would be an enormous bombshell for Apple to drop in 2014, don’t you think?
